ISO 3864 – International Standard for Safety Signs & Markings:
This international standard defines the design principles for safety signs that convey safety messages. By following ISO 3864, our relevant signs are designed with the official and appropriate colours to effectively communicate essential safety information, reducing the risk of accidents and confusion in the workplace.
BS 5499 Fire safety signs, notices and graphic symbols
British Standard providing guidelines for the design, installation, and use of fire safety signs, notices, and graphic symbols. The standard is intended to ensure that fire safety information is communicated effectively to all building occupants, helping them to identify escape routes, locate firefighting equipment, and understand safety procedures. BS 5499 specifies the use of internationally recognised symbols and signs (see ISO 3864 & ISO 7010), which should be consistent in design and located in conspicuous positions throughout a facility.
The Health and Safety Regulations 1996 - Fire Safety
The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 implemented European Council Directive 92/58/EEC on minimum requirements for the provision of safety signs at work. Within this, signs are categorised into specific types with prescribed layouts to ensure immediate recognition.
This part of the regulation implements those aspects of the European Council Directive 92/58/EEC dealing with fire safety. Advice on the use of fire safety signs can be obtained from your enforcing authority for fire safety. In general, these Regulations will not require any changes where existing fire safety signs containing symbols comply with BS 5499. New signs are also acceptable if they are similarly chosen to comply with BS 5499.
Safety & Guidance: the regulation aims to ensure that safety and security risks are clearly communicated, understood, and can be acted upon to prevent accidents and injuries.
Liability: If an accident occurs, the presence of suitable signage show that reasonable safety measures were taken, which could limit legal repercussions.
Our Safe Condition (including Escape Route), Prohibition, Warning and Mandatory signs comply with the safety colour regulations. This ensures that certain colours adhere to their specific meanings. Safety signs are not a substitute for those other methods of controlling risks such as engineering controls and safe systems of work.
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies to all non-domestic premises in England and Wales, clear and effective signage is mandatory to ensure fire safety. Emergency escape routes and exits must be well-marked with signs that are visible even in low light or during smoke-obscured conditions, which are ideal use-cases for photoluminescent signage. These signs are crucial for guiding occupants safely out of the building and enabling them to respond effectively in case of a fire.
All fire safety signs must conform to BS 5499, which specifies the design and application of such signs.
