SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea):
This convention mandates that all marine safety signage used for life-saving and emergency equipment on ships must be clear, durable, and remain visible in low-light conditions to ensure the safety of crew and passengers. It requires that safety signs be designed with internationally recognised symbols, ensuring they are easily understood regardless of language, in alignment with ISO 7010 standards. For visibility in emergencies, SOLAS also references IMO Resolution A.752(18) and ISO 15370 standards discussed below.
IMO Resolution A.752(18):
Establishes performance standards for Low Location Lighting (LLL) systems on passenger ships to aid evacuation in dark or smoke-filled emergencies. When photoluminescent signs are used in escape route guidance, it specifies minimum luminance levels of 15 mcd/m² after 10 minutes and 2 mcd/m² after 60 minutes in darkness. All YourGlowSign photoluminescent signs exceed these requirements. The materials used should also be durable and resistant to maritime conditions, ensuring long-term reliability and visibility.
ISO 15370:2010 (Ships and Marine Technology – Low-Location Lighting on Passenger Ships):
Sets specific guidelines for Low Location Lighting (LLL) systems on passenger ships, requiring photoluminescent materials to meet minimum luminance levels to ensure visibility during emergencies. The standard reflects the same luminescence and durability requirements as IMO Resolution A.752(18), above . It also specifies placement requirements for LLL systems along corridors, stairways, and exits to guide passengers and crew to safety.
ISO 24409 Series (Design, Location, and Use of Shipboard Safety Signs, Safety-Related Signs, Safety Notices, and Safety Markings):
Provides standards for the design, application, and placement of safety signs on ships to ensure that safety information is clear and easily understood in marine environments. The standard mandates that safety signs use standardised symbols, shapes, and colours, enabling quick recognition across different languages and nationalities. Signs must conform to ISO 7010 for symbol design and ISO 3864 for safety colours.
ISO 3864 – International Standard for Safety Signs & Markings:
This international standard defines the design principles for safety signs that convey safety messages. By following ISO 3864, our relevant signs are designed with the official and appropriate colours to effectively communicate essential safety information, reducing the risk of accidents and confusion in the workplace.
ISO 7010 - Graphical Symbols for Safety Communication:
Outlines the design and application of standardised safety signs to ensure clear and consistent communication in public spaces, workplaces, and more. The symbols in our relevant signs comply with ISO 7010, which helps to ensure that each sign is universally understood, regardless of language or cultural differences.
